Science Week

Home Experiments
Thank you all for the science experiments that you did with the kids at home during science week. We really enjoyed seeing all of the photos that you sent in and recreating a few of the experiments in class (with mixed success). The spinning coin in the balloon was my personal favorite, but the kids go mad for anything that you have to rub on your head.

6th Floor Science Center
This week the 6th floor meeting room was converted into a science center. We had our turn visiting it on Tuesday and there were a lot of cool things to investigate. The models of DNA molecules were a little advanced, but the magnate cars and 'black snake' chemical reaction were fascinating.

Grade 4 Demonstrations
Visiting Mr. Kubatov's grade four class was a really great experience for both the older and younger students. They big kids did their best to demonstrate such experiments as bending water streams with static from a balloon (more head rubbing) and using using surface tension to hold a coaster on an upside down glass of water, but things quickly devolved into messy chaos. It was very fun. Preschool B were proud to present them with the recycled paper 'thank you' hearts that had spend so long making.

Science Fair
Fridays science fair had a lot of excellent exhibits, from marble races testing friction to lemons and oranges making enough electricity to light up an LED. I might be slightly biased, but I think our preschool display was the best of the lot; we presented all the work we've been doing for our 'sharing the planet' unit, starting with our trash sorting draws and moving on to paper making and composting. The kids wrote up short explanations for each part (using our recycled paper) and had photographed our daily contributions to the compost. We put out great big bag of plastic rubbish on top of a suggestions box and will have a look at what the bigger kids think we should do with it next week.

Thank you all for your participation in this years science week! I think your kids, even if that don't all go on to become scientists, will definitely help to make the world a better place.
